تعریف النقش فی الموسوعة الفارسیة (فن تزیین الأشیاء بطریقة تشبه الفسیفساء مع مثلثات صغیرة ) کانت تصمیمات خاتم المختلفة دائما فی أشکال هندسیة منتظمة . یتم تعیین هذه الأشکال الهندسیة معا عن طریق وضع مثلثات صغیرة معا . جعل مثلثات من الخشب والمعادن والعظام أصغر المثلثات هی ختام أفضل . فی خطة واحدة الخاتم لبناء أصغر وحدة هندسیة على الأقل ثلاثة مثلثات وللأکبر منه الحد الأقصى أربعمائة المثلث یتم استخدامه. فی إیران ، قبل ظهور الإسلام ، کان شکلاً من أشکال الخاتم والطریقة التی تعمل بها هی ذلک من خشب بلون واحد ، تم قطع مکعبات على جانبی أربعة ملیمترات ومع تصمیمات مختلفة تم ترکیبها على لوحة وتسمیر .

وکانت هذه الطریقة شائعة حتى عدة قرون بعد الإسلام .
